💀 Character Information
Name: Takasugi Shinsuke
Canon: Gintama
Canon Point: 10 years pre-canon, during the (very bloody) Joui Wars. Before, spoiler: Gintoki kills Shouyou.
Age: 17
Description: Green eyes (two!!), short Anime Black™ hair, 5'7", around 130 lbs. He's broad shouldered with slender legs and dresses in mostly dark colors while in his Kiheitai uniform but prefers bright patterns in his kimonos. He's either standing tall and proud or slouching like an utter shit, there is no in between. Like his closest comrades, he's often seen in a hachimaki -- but unlike them, he never wears armor.
Physical changes: I'd like to make this change very gradual and have it affect the eye that he's missing later on in canon. It'll start with blurry or flickery vision and discomfort and work its way up to a demonic appearance. Maybe red sclera or something to that effect? Feels maggots crawling around in it? Bleeding or scale-like hardening? WE'LL JUST HAVE TO FIND OUT.
Powers: None! He's shounen-levels of a baller samurai and definitely stronger than your average guy, but he has no powers or super strength or anything of the sort.
History: Wiki article! If that isn't sufficient, I have something written dealing solely with his part of the canon I can link upon request.
Hell Status: Hell newbie.
What Brings Them To Hell: A love of Yakult, a tendency to hog the only bathroom in the house and read magazines for hours right after dinner, cheating at Uno and Kick The Can, and being an 1860's Emo. If there are any SJWs in Hell, he'd definitely get an 'accepted' stamp on account of his xenophobia. I guess killing a lot of people in a war and generally being a vengeful dickbag help too?
The Pitch: So you're wondering why a guy like Takasugi should be welcome into your little slice of hell? What's in it for you, where's the rub, is there a catch-22? Well, that's irrelevant. He's a tenacious man, fueled by goals, passions, and whims. It doesn't matter if you turn him away; it'll only make busting through those rotten gates that much more satisfying. Loathe to any who think they're better than -- or even equal to -- him, he's a spitshot of dynamite to authority or being told what he can't do, and hell truly hath no fury like his ego challenged.
Glory envy, liquor gluttony, samurai pride, battle lust, and honest-to-God unbridled wrath make an appealing recruit; he's quick to make rivalries, cause fights, get bruises, and... wax poetic about philosophy and myth.
The CR is always the most rewarding, because he can be a wet dream (and/?)or terrible nightmare. He either projects his underdeveloped feelings onto others' lives, gets 'involved' in attempt to fix himself, orrrrr he just plain doesn't care. It's literally hot lava or frozen tundra when it comes to his feelings. However, anything that interests him will be chased down with reckless abandon, often to the destruction of both parties. He bonds through fights, mutual suffering, and shared pain; he wants to dig his fingers into raw meat and see where the hurt is and if it's relatable; he wants everyone to suffer like he does. Apparently some don't find that appealing? Lucky for him, he can put up a good front of being charismatic and interesting juuuust enough to get others to stick around.
At least there are some redeeming qualities to getting close. Once you get past the extreme criticism, he's non-judgmental and will embrace who you really are. Killed hundreds in cold blood? Hey, you had a good reason. Probably. Regularly rob the poor for your own self-gain? Ingrates should learn to protect their belongings better. Want to live where everything is nice, peaceful, and serene? ...well, you probably have a split personality, because that's the only way he got interested in the first place. The point is, he'll see what you really want, encourage goals, and be capable of making you feel like you're truly appreciated.
Especially if you're just as obsessive and controlling as he is.
So why the "not a girl not yet a woman" shtick? When Takasugi's older, it's eeeextremely difficult for him to make meaningful connections; he's too much of a destructive sociopath with goal tunnel-vision and self-flagellating misery. This way, the last inklings of compassion and empathy haven't yet been scalded out, but he still has the complexity of hatred, rage, and petty vengeance mixed with charisma, poetry, and passion given life through war, struggle, and bonds. He stands on a precipice where meaningful CR can push him down one path or another, and isn't the unknown where all the fun comes from?
Personality: He isn't exactly a "minor character", but he is taken from 10 years prior to the canon so I thought in regards to the question I asked on the FAQ, I'd go ahead and include this in the app. Here is his personality!
Setting Fit: Well, how easily does anyone fit into hell, even for someone who knew he was heading there in the first place? Takasugi will be bitter, angry, and above all disappointed in himself -- not because he's here, but because he died. He'll not yet know the truth of what Gintoki did and who his Sensei really is, and therefore he'll take his death as a personal failure. He died before he could save the man he went to war for, and he let his comrades down. That's a big pill to swallow.
But because Takasugi is so emotionally stunted when it comes to actually dealing with things like that, all that disappointment in himself will get repressed and he'll lash out in immature ways: taking things out on his hivemates, being generally moody and unpleasant. He isn't going to make friends very quickly or very easily.
His stubbornness and hatred of authority will have him trying to get away with as much as possible in terms of rebellion. Rejecting jobs unless they truly interest him, ditching punishment sessions to the success of greater torture, being the one to cause as much minor mayhem and petty crime as possible... With enough time and build of confidence, he might even try to find like-minded people and stage an eventual rebellion. How exciting.
